Everyone has a special dog in their lives and Abigail was our special gal. She finished her AKC championship with 3 majors and back to back Best of Breed wins over very tough California competition and Top Ten specials of the day. At the time, it was far more typical for male RR’s to take Breed wins, and although only 18 months old at the time of her championship title, we decided to make an entry in the Westminster KC. Our entry was accepted and we made plans for the big trip to New York the following February. Madison Square Garden was filled with excitement and anticipation and we were happy Abby could be there to participate.
After we arrived, our regular handler found out she had a ring conflict - she was showing a top Whippet, and would be unable to show Abby. Her partner stepped in and offered to show Abigail and while we sat in the stands to watch, one could sense all of the excitement coming up from the garden floor like an aura. The dogs entered the ring and one by one took their places. The judge examined the boys first and made some preliminary cuts. The girls came next - one by one; individual examination, down and back, “go around please”. Our eyes were glued on Abby - she was showing like a dream. We were happy to accept a great showing at the Garden and to our delight, Abby made the first round of cuts.
Then the judge was ready to made his second cut - Abby and a couple of other girls stayed in the ring. With each cut, we filled with more excitement. What an honor to watch our girl show so beautifully. At this point we were overjoyed and knew Abby would walk away with something - maybe an Award of Merit! Even with all the clamor in the stands, I could hear a pin drop. The judge was taking a hard look at his final choices, working them again - down and back, go around.
Abigail continued to give all that was asked of her and she floated around the ring never putting a foot down wrong. As Abigail came full circle, the judge didn’t hesitate - he pointed to Abby and proclaimed “Best of Breed.” The next few minutes became a blur. We discovered friends from the Bay area sitting a row away. We jumped up hugging one another and cheering. All of it was wonderfully unexpected. Abby went on to enjoy a very nice show career, never staying away from home longer than a weekend at a time. After retiring from her show career, she lived the life she deserved - a lady of leisure. Some career highlights:
1994: Best of Opposite Sex from the classes at the Orange Coast RR Club regional Specialty for a 5 point major (her first major win) over bitch specials.
1994: Back to back Best of Breed wins from the classes to finish her championship.
1995: Best of Breed at the prestigious Westminster KC at the tender age of 1 y, 9 m.
1995: Best of Opposite Sex win at the Orange Coast RR Club regional Specialty.
1995: 1st Award of Merit, RRCUS National Specialty
Multiple Best of Breed wins, Hound Group wins & placements; RR Top Ten ranking, # 1 RR bitch and #5 Rhodesian Ridgeback.
1997: Best of Breed win at the Orange Coast Rhodesian Ridgeback Club Regional Specialty over current (1997) Top Ten Specials.
Abby lived a very happy, full life. Top Dog of our household till the very end. She was great with kids and other dogs, and always enjoyed being around her people. Abby was a moderate bitch with strong bone structure, nice correct feet, excellent movement - she floated around the ring.
Ironically as everyone was preparing to go in the ring at the Westminster KC on February 11, 2008, we held our Westminster Abby as she was drawing her last breaths. She was 3 months shy of her 15th birthday. Healthy and robust her entire life, flirting with her grandson Buzz the day before her passing. Abigail was one of a kind and will always have a special place in our hearts.
